ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE

Join us for two days of trail running at the luxurious Wetlands Game Lodge. This isn’t a race, but a trail running journey with flexible daily distances moulded around your trail running level and experience.

Just 3 hours from Gauteng, this luxurious lodge is nestled between the majestic Versamel Mountains. Come unwind and enjoy nature and take the chance to explore beautiful routes, without the stress of racing! 

Besides running stunning trails with spectacular views and being immersed in nature with buck and other animals around, the day is also designed to showcase all aspects of trail running. Learn new skills, improve your running and technique, learn navigation, tips on nutrition and gear, and gain the confidence to get out and explore trails on your own. Hosted by pro trail runner, Rory Scheffer, and Niel 'Skippy' Claassens.

Day 1 - Between 15KM and 25KM

Day 2 - Between 11KM and 21KM

Routes will be discussed the evening before.

TRAIL RUNNING CLINIC 

Over the weekend we will teach you a variety of skills and trail running techniques which will improve your enjoyment of the sport.

Running footwear basics:

Different shoes for different terrain

Trail Shoes - Wet condition, dry condition, long distance, racers vs. road shoes - Stability shoes, neutral shoes, high mileage, racers

 

Nutrition:

Fuel for training and racing

General nutrition (day to day), hydration, recovery and pre-race nutrition

 

Running technique

Running form, uphill running, power hiking, down-hills and cornering

 

Mental Aspects:

Mental health, longevity in the sport, meditation and keeping the enjoyment

 

Equipment:

Trekking poles, hydration packs, jackets, emergency kit and what to pack on race day / adventures - and why are there compulsory equipment?

 

Strength Training:

Not about gaining muscle, why is it important, exercises, form and mobility

ACCOMMODATION

We’ll be staying at the luxurious 4 star Wetlands Game Lodge where you can enjoy the finest comfort and luxury. With comfortable rooms, great local amenities, spectacular views and space for us to relax after a great day on the trail, Wetlands offers the perfect venue for a weekend away. Each room has two single beds with en-suite bathrooms. Accommodation is on a per person sharing basis.

FAQ

TRAIL RUNNING

The terrain is undulating and includes some steep hill sections which we walk, as well as some steep downhill sections at times. We’ll be running through valleys, over hills, through forests, alongside streams. Underfoot conditions consist of a mixture of hard-packed road, cut grass, and jeep track.

TEMPERATURES

We run the trails at the start of Spring when the countryside is still a light brown and slowly turning green. We can expect daily temperatures to sit on an average of 20 degrees C, however, being in the mountains, there is every chance of a hot spell (25 degrees C) or a colder spell (sub 16 degrees C).

Also, being at high altitude and in the mountains, you should prepare for the high chance of rain and wind, as well as bright sunshine. In the mountains, it is not unusual to experience four seasons in one day.
