RULES
RACE NUMBER
Participants will be given a race number at registration. This must be fixed to your front, either pinned to your shirt or on the hip/pelvic area and be fully visible throughout the entire race. Race belts are recommended.

GENERAL RULES

Accepting any form of mobile support along the route if forbidden.

Runners are not allowed to accept any support from their crew outside the designated Checkpoint areas. 

Runners may take as much food and beverage as needed from each Water point. However, participants may not take any bottles, cans or cups from these areas and should plan on carrying and refilling their own hydration systems at the Water points.

ENVIRONMENT​​

Any littering on the course is strictly prohibited. Runners are responsible for ensuring that anything they discard goes into a bin. Never startle or approach any animal and always give extra room and announce your presence appropriately to prevent possible dangerous situations (buffalo, eland, ostrich etc.). Always follow the GPS route. The taking of shortcuts, including avoiding switchbacks, are not permitted. Always respect your environment and the opportunity given to us to run in this beautiful location.

CUT-OFF TIMES

ORIGINS has several cut-off times that will be strictly enforced. Cut-offs are in place to ensure that the Medical/Search and Rescue teams can deploy to various parts of the route and participants have sufficient time to complete the remaining distance. Participants are required to depart each checkpoint before the cut-off time. Participants will receive a DNF classification is any cut-off time is not achieved​.

 
GEAR

Origins requires runners to carry all the Compulsory Gear for the entire race, this is only applicable to the 50KM Ultra Trail. The weather can change drastically during the day as the trails take runners into high altitude terrain. 

COMPULSORY GEAR - 50KM

Below is a list of compulsory gear:

Fully charged cell phone | Headlight | Hydration pack | Water bladder with carry capacity of 2 or more litres | Space blanket | Trail shoes | Socks | Whistle | Cap or wide brim hat | Nutrition and food | Thermal top or arm sleeves | Windproof jacket or Waterproof jacket

The compulsory item list is weather dependent and is subject to change and will be finalised at race briefing.

​RECOMMENDED GEAR

Below is a list of recommended gear:

​Race Belt | Sunglasses | Sun Screen | Ziplock bags | Wet wipes | Anti-chafe Cream | First Aid Kit | Flasks | Extra socks | Spare clothes | Headlight batteries | Gloves | Thermal pants. Runners who choose to use poles must carry these on them at all times, from start to finish. Poles cannot be discarded, stashed or given to crew for keeping.

  

GENERAL INFO

WATER POINTS and CHECKPOINT

There are CHECKPOINTS / WATERPOINTS on the 20KM and 50KM route. Each point with have water, 32Gi Hydrate, oranges, bananas, potatoes (Donkerhoek only) and sweets.

LITTER FREE RACE

The ORIGINS ULTRA TRAILS is a little free race meaning that all runners will be required to carry their own hydration bladders, cups, bottles for use on the trail and at the water tables. Please ensure that you bring your own cup or equivalent to the event.

DNF

If you drop out of the race, you are required to inform the nearest marshal based at the nearest Checkpoint / Waterpoint. It is your responsibility to make sure that race organisers are aware of your DNF and your intention to pull out of the race.

DROP BAGS

50KM participants will be issued with an ORIGINS 'drop bag' at registration. This bag drop will be taken to Donkerhoek Lodge. 'Drop Bag' are to be placed at the marked Bag Drop box at the start for transport to the  Checkpoint. You can place extra nutrition and a change of clothes/shoes/etc. in this Drop Bag. No valuables are to be placed in your Drop Bag. Your Drop Bag will be brought back to the finish for collection at intervals through out the event. Any bags not collected during Race Week will be donated to charity. No bag will be shipped back to participants.

LOST AND FOUND
Any items left after the race will be donated to local runners in need and no 'lost and found' items will be ship to you.
RESULTS
Preliminary results will be available immediately on the website. Final results will be posted on this website within a few days of the race.

INSURANCE

The organiser has public liability covered by iToo (The Hollard Insurance Company Limited). This does not include personal accident insurance for competitors. We recommend that you arrange your own personal accident insurance, ambulance cover and income protection insurance before participating in the event to cover any unforeseen personal costs you may incur due to ambulance trips, medical expenses or time off work due to injuries sustained whilst participating in the event. International participants should take out travel insurance that provides cover for ultra-trail running events.

SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS
As an ORIGINS participant, you confirm that you are aware of the risks and hazards associated with participating in the event and freely accept and fully assume all the dangers and risks associated with the event and the possibility of personal injury, death, property damage or loss resulting therefrom. ​All participants understand that it is your personal responsibility to ensure that adequate clothing, gear and all protective equipment required when participating in the event is worn and you have sole responsibility for their personal possessions and athletic equipment during the event. The ORIGINS ULTRA TRAIL is a tough challenge and participants need to make sure that all race equipment is in good working order, and that you are physically fit, sufficiently prepared and able to compete in the event and furthermore have not been advised not to participate in the event by a medical professional.
